Florida Geological Survey Vertebrate Paleo collection is ON LINE..

The Florida Museum of Natural History is pleased to announce the third
searchable database has been added to its web site. The Florida Geological
Survey collection joins the Pierce Brodkorb fossil bird collection, and the
Invertebrate Paleontology type collection as multi-parametered searchable
on-line databases. Check out our home page at: http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu

A brief description of the FGS collection follows:

The Florida Geological Survey (FGS) fossil vertebrate collection
was started during the 1920s and housed in the FGS headquarters in
Tallahassee. From then until after the 2nd World War, after which time the
vertebrate paleontology program at the University of Florida (UF) was
started, specimens from the FGS collection were the primary source of fossil
vertebrate descriptions from Florida. In 1976 the entire FGS fossil
vertebrate collection was transferred to UF's Florida Museum of Natural
History (FLMNH) with support from a National Science Foundation grant. The
FGS collection contains about 10,000 catalogued specimens and is
particulalry rich in the early Miocene (e.g., Thomas Farm and panhandle
localities), late Miocene-early Pliocene (e.g., classic Bone Valley sites),
and Pleistocene (e.g., Vero Beach and Reddick localities). The majority of
specimens in the FGS collection are mammals, followed by reptiles,
birds, and a relatively small number of amphibians and fish. Although there
are some sites that are unique to the FGS collection, many of the sites
overlap with holdings in the main UF and Brodkorb Fossil Bird collections,
which are both also housed in the FLMNH.
