The information about the Geoscience job listserver was distributed through
USENET Newsgroups (e.g. sci.bio.evolution). I subscribed today and received
the following instructions. A demonstration of (the majority) of serious
information distributed in the Newsgroups.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION
------------------------
Welcome to the geosci-jobs mailing list!
If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, send the
following command in email to "listserv@NETCOM.COM":

You may subscribe/resubscribe at any time by sending the following

If you do so, Majordomo will check the 'From:' tag on your message
and will add it to the list. If the 'From:' does not contain a valid
e-mail address, try subscribing by adding your e-mail address to
the command above (e.g., subscribe geosci-jobs you@whatever.site).
IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FROM THE SERVER within a day
or two, your command probably did not succeed and you should
read the Majordomo Troubleshooting section below.
There is no charge either for subscribing or for posting Geoscience
Employment Opportunity Announcments.

MAJORDOMO COMMANDS AND TROUBLESHOOTING
--------------------------------------
The preferred method of SUBSCRIBING to this mail list is to send a
message to listserv@netcom.com that contains the text
'subscribe geosci-jobs' (sans quotes). Doing so lets Majordomo
automatically add you to the list and send you this file, without
human intervention. What Majordomo does is to check the 'From:'
information on you message and add it to the list. Unfortunately,
some 'From:' tags don't contain enough routing information or
otherwise yields an invalid e-mail address.
If you do not receive an acknowledgement from Majordomo within a day
or two, try again... but add your e-mail address to the command
this time (e.g., subscribe geosci-jobs you@whatever.site). This
subscription process will take a bit longer because Majordomo will
send ME a message asking for me to approve your request before it adds
you to the list. Once I approve, it will send you an acknowledgement.
To LEAVE this mail list, send a message to listserv@netcom.com
that contains the text 'unsubscribe geosci-jobs' (sans quotes).
If any of the above don't work, send me (ted.smith@mtnswest.com) a
message describing your problem and I'll try to quickly resolve it.
Majordomo <listserv@netcom.com> understands several commands, and
is not limited to a single command per message (it will process
commands until reaching end-of-message or the command "end"). The
command "help" will tell you about all the other commands.
The commands which Majordomo <listserv@netcom.com> understands and
which are for everyone to use are:
subscribe <list> [<address>]
unsubscribe <list> [<address>]
which [<address>]
who <list>
info <list>
lists
help
end
Please send these commands to the server <listserv@netcom.com> and not to
the list. Detailed explanations of all of the above commands may be
obtained by asking for "help" from Majordomo <listserv@netcom.com>.
HOW TO POST AN EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT
--------------------------------------------------
Before posting an Employment Opportunity Announcement to GEOSCI-JOBS,
please read the 'Purpose of the List (What to Post/What NOT to Post)'
section above.
To post an Employment Opportunity Announcement, send it as a message
to geosci-jobs@netcom.com. The preferred format is to (1) include the
educational level required, field, and location as the subject of
the message [e.g., PhD: Petrology: USA-KS would indicate a PhD-level
petrology position located in Kansas] and (2) format your message
to a width of 72 characters or less (longer lines get truncated at
some sites, including archive sites).
Posts to this list are only partly moderated. All posts from
non-subscribers are sent to the list owner for approval. All posts of
more than 250 lines also are sent to the list owner for approval. All
other posts are immediately sent to list subscribers.
ARCHIVE SITES (Sort of)
-----------------------
On a test basis, this list will be linked to GeoInfo Job Market, carried
on most GeoInfo BBS's and at some Usenet sites as geoinfonet.job-market.
At this time, these sites constitute the ONLY known archive sites.
Technical problems sometimes prevent posts to the mail list from
appearing at these sites. In the next few weeks, I will attempt to
establish a www or ftp-able archive site.

unsubscribing, etc., feel free to contact me.
