ld theories don't die, they just get recycled.  Seriously, 
what made the original Alvarez hypothesis unique was that there was.
for once, independent evidence for the mechanism (instead of: "if aliens
bombarded the earth with death rays the dinosaurs would all be killed;
the dinosaurs are dead, so it is reasonable to believe that aliens
bombarded the earth with death rays.")  I prefer LArry Gonick's hypothesis:
"they went out for cigarettes and never came back." - Roy P.
