There have been several additions to the PaleoNet ftp site recently. In
order to bring everyone up to date the Contents file for the site is listed
below. The address of the ftp site is....
mailserver.nhm.ac.uk
Use the word anonymous as the userid and type your e-mail address in as
your password. This will get you into the NHM's main ftp server. PaleoNet
material will be found in the 'PaleoNet' directory. Anyone experiencing
difficulty gaining access to or downloading files from the ftp site should
contact me. Also, PaleoNet encourages its subscribers to make contributions
to the ftp site. If you know of a particularly useful (or fun) piece of
software that you would like to share with the rest of us please let me
know about it.
Finally, at the recent SEPM Graphic Correlation Research Conference we
discussed using the PaleoNet ftp site as a general purpose repository for
paleontological datasets. As paleontology becomes more quantitative, access
to data becomes more important. I know that I have spent many hours typing
other people's appendices into my computer by hand so that I could make a
graph or perform an analysis for my own research. Life would certainly be
much easier for people like me if we had access to a centralized collection
of datasets that could be downloaded. I would like to think that
paleontologists could develop a tradition of depositing data in a
publically-accessible ftp site in the same way that we deposit figured
specimens in publically-assessible museum collections. In this sense, I
don't recognize a practical distinction between specimens and data
matrices. It's all information and in a perfect world we should have access
to all of it. Besides, just think of the nomenclatural possibilities. Soon
we will be able to add terms like holodata, paradata, neodata, etc. to our
papers! Ultimately I would also like to add digital images (e.g., digital
plates) and particularly important graphics (e.g., paleogeographic map
files) to the PaleoNet "Museum of Paleo. Information" but I think we're
going to have to sort out the copyright implications of this with the
various journals first. As an initial step in this direction, though, I
will place the paleogeographic appendices from my own recent Paleobiology
paper in the "Museum" and I invite other PaleoNet subscribers to do the
same by contribute any data from their own published papers that they think
might be of interest to the paleontological community as a whole. By
participating in this initiative I believe that we can provide a great
service to our fellow paleontologists and help establish a useful
electronic infrastructure for future paleontological research.
