Electric log correlations are no substitute for paleontological
correlations. Each provides distinctly different products. Log
analysts or more commonly now, petrophysicists, provide information
gleaned from remote sensing techniques as the drill bit penetrates the
rocks. In contrast, paleontologists work in the fourth dimension
(time) and in paleoenvironmental determinations. Why, we as
paleontologists, have allowed log analysis to substitute for
paleontological (biostratigraphic) analysis is beyond me, but that is
commonly what the decision makers believe and act on. That is an
important marketing point for all of us in this environment.
