Hello everyone, Jane L. Forsyth, Professor Emerita of Geology at Bowling Green State University and an expert in the glacial geology and ecology of Ohio, passed away yesterday, Sept. 19, at the age of 84. Jane completed a Masters at the University of Cincinnati in 1946, working on the stratigraphy of the Late Ordovician Cincinnatian Series. She received her Ph.D. in glacial geology from Ohio State University in 1956, at a time when women geologists were still an anomaly. Dubbed "the Princess of the Pleistocene" by her many friends, Jane contributed scores of papers and geologic maps on glacial features and soils, and explored the connection between the glacial history of Ohio and its plant ecology. Jane was an inspiration and mentor for many, including me. Throughout her career, she worked tirelessly to increase our understanding and appreciation of the geology of Ohio. Jane was also one of the first at BGSU to promote an awareness of the environment through her classes, talks in the community, and lifestyle. There's no word yet on a memorial service - let me know if you'd like to be kept informed.
