paleonet Anne Dhondt-orbituary

Dear colleagues,

There are very sad news for the Palaeontological Community.

We have just been informed that our friend and colleague "Annie" Dhondt passed away last Friday, September 1st after a long illness. Her funeral will take place at 13.30 on Thursday, September 7th at Brussels Crematorium.

Dr. Anne Valerie Dhondt (Gent, 1942-Brussels, 2006) was a reputed specialist on bivalves, mainly Inoceramids, and until her death was the Head of the Invertebrate Palaeontological Collections at the Institut Royal des Sciences naturelles de Belgique (Brussels), where she worked since 1967.

Our late colleague, Annie, was a honest and productive scientist, involved in Cretaceous projects, Societies (Groupe Français du Crétacé, GFC) and for many years in the Subcommission on Cretaceous Stratigraphy until the last Geological Congress at Florence. She was always of great help for a large number of scientist visiting the collections at the Institut Royal des Sciences naturelles de Belgique and for many others over the world who sent her specimens to be determined.

Nevertheless, Annie was also an extremely kind and friendly person, always willing to give up his time to help others, especially young scientists and colleagues from Eastern European Countries. Annie was also well reputed as an expert in many different languages, something that help she so much to arrange and organise meetings, projects and papers.

We assume that the Palaeontological Community will certainly miss her. Anyway, those who knew Annie are very glad to have met her.
