For the new SNF (Swiss National Science Foundation) project "Origin of an Important Clade: Stratigraphy, Evolution and Palaeoenvironment of the Early Ammonoidea² we are looking for a highly motivated PhD student. The main topic of the project is the evolution of the earliest ammonoids, the stratigraphic framework, their morphology and environmental change in the Early Devonian. The project includes fieldwork in North Africa and possibly China, museum visits world wide and extensive lab work. Candidates with a masters degree or a diploma in paleontology, biology, geology or related topics, and a strong motivation to contribute to the success of this project are invited to apply. Other requirements are: proficiency in English, (knowledge of German or French is advantageous), interest in quantitative methods (morphometry, evolution, stratigraphy) and social compatibility. The official start of the project is October 2006 or soon thereafter, with a planned duration of three to four years.
