Folks, For those of you who work with mollusks, you may be aware of a book that was published by the American Malacological Union (now the American Malacological Society) entitled How to Study and Collect Shells. It was published in 1974 and was 107 pages long with two illustrations. I would like to announce that a vastly updated and expanded version has just been published. The new volume entitled, The Mollusks: A Guide to Their Study, Collection, and Preservation, is xii + 445 pages, has 101 figures, and is the work of 29 international contributors. The volume was edited by C. Sturm, T. Pearce, and A. Valdes. The volume includes chapters on collecting and cleaning shells, archival methods, digital and film imaging, dredging, and cladistics and molecular techniques. There are chapters covering all 7 extant classes of mollusks (yes even the Aplacophora and Monoplacophora) as well as fossil mollusks. These are only a few of the 31 chapters. More information on the book or information on purchasing it can be obtained at http://universal-publishers.com/book.php?method=ISBN&book=1581129300 The American Malacological Society is a not-for-profit organization. Revenue from the book will help defray the costs of the scientific program, student scholarships and grants. The AMS earns more if the book is ordered from the publisher than through commercial ventures such as Amazon.com or Barne&Nobles.com. Thus, we would encourage ordering directly from the publisher. If anyone has questions please e-mail me at doc.fossil@gmail.com The cost of the book is $35.95 Regards, Charlie .................................................
