Re: paleonet Allocrioceras hazzardi

Hi: I'm not sure if these will be of any help to you at all, but here
goes...
In South Dakota (Black Hills area) the contact between the Carlile Fm
and the overlying Niobrar Fm is marked by a phosphate concentrate
horizon. An old reference book I have listed an occurrence of
Allocrioceras sp. in the ammonite fauna from that horizon. I'm not
sure if that could represent A. hazzardi or not.
Here is the book title: "Geology of the Black Hills, South Dakota,
and Wyoming, 2nd edition". Fredrick J. Rich, Editor. Field Trip
Guidebooks Geological Society of America, Rocky Mountain Section, 1981
Annual Meeting, Rapid City, South Dakota. The reference to
Allocrioceras is on page 14 of the first article in the book,
"Stratigraphy and Depositional Environments of Lower and Upper
Cretaceous Strata, Southern Black Hills, South Dakota." by Richard
Bretz, Gale Bishop, James Fox, and Kunar Dandavati.
The other suggestion I have is that you might try contacting the Black
Hills Museum of Natural History:
http://www.bhmnh.org/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/
You can send them a question via e-mail under the "contact us" header.
I have sent them some questions before and have generally gotten some
helpful responses. The Larson brothers run the Museum and related gift
shop, and have collected extensively in the Cretaceous of the Black
Hills area. Mostly they do work on Pierre Shale/Fox Hills Fm
ammonites, but I would guess they must have some specimens from the
Carlile/Niobrara contact horizon. I'm not sure if they are currently
working on them or not, but it is worth a shot. If you can send along
any digital photos, that may help.
I hope you have some luck with your search. I realize these contacts
likely cannot help you much, but if there is even a small chance, it's
worth a try.
Good luck!
