Dear PaleoNetters,
I agree with Breandan. The moment you start arguing about something like the development of the vertebrate eye in detail is the moment you give credibility to these fundamentalist whackers. We need to show people how science works and how ID and its malevolent uncle Creationism is simply a ploy by foaming-at-the-mouth Christians to force their peculiar beliefs onto everybody’s children.
After the rather foolish comments by the Australian Minister for Education, this topic was dealt with by the 7.30 report (a current affairs show which follows the news) and a much fuller version of what he said was shown. He basically said that it should be people’s choice what they have taught to their children. In his defence, however, he stated that he did not think that ID would replace the scientific explanation of the development of life. As he said it: “Do I think it should be a replacement for teaching the origins of mankind in a scientific sense? I most certainly don't think that it should be at all. In fact, I'd be quite concerned if it were to replace it."
On this same television show they interviewed a Colin Bunnett, who seems to be a rebadged creationist (evolution causes divorce etc.) with very little by way of scientific knowledge (the transcript can be seen at: http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2005/s1449597.htm). What we need to do is to expose their lies and deceit, not argue about what we have yet to find out on particular scientific arcana. We need to inform journalists as to what questions to ask and to let these nutters hang themselves. I suspect that Mr Bunnett may have been sucked in to admitting that he thought evolution caused everything from homosexuality to murder or World War II, and that the earth was only 6 thousand years old and that it wasn’t the vague ‘designer’ who did the handiwork, but his god. It’s just that the journalist wasn’t aware enough to ask such pertinent questions.
