The Geological
Survey of Alabama has transferred its fossil vertebrates to the Alabama
Museum of Natural History. Both institutions are on the University of Alabama
campus in Tuscaloosa. The transfer will make it possible for visitors to examine
the collection conveniently under one roof, as has not been possible since the
Museum was made independent of the Survey in 1961.
Most of the
transferred specimens are of Upper Cretaceous mosasaurs, turtles, fishes, and
other vertebrates collected by Samuel W. Shannon, Jack T. Kidd, Walter B. Jones,
and other Survey staff members from the 1850s to present. The Survey, which
has more than 60 staff members today, retains its extensive
collections of fossil invertebrates, plants, and microfossils; rocks and
minerals; cores and cuttings; well logs; and modern fishes and insects, as well
as its library.
The specimens
are currently being cataloged as part of the Museum collection. In the
future, inquiries about specimens should be directed to the Registrar's Office,
Alabama Museum of Natural History, Box 870340, University of Alabama,
Tuscaloosa, AL 35487, USA, telephone (205) 348-7550. I remain available for
inquiries about stratigraphy, fossil invertebrates, and trace
fossils.
Cheers,
