My apologies for the cross-posting. For those interested in the use of distributed database technology in natural history collections, you are no doubt aware of the Darwin Core schema (http://darwincore.calacademy.org) and associated DiGIR protocol (http://digir.net/). The original DiGIR protocol did not provide element definitions for querying geological time attributes of collections objects, a clear obstacle to use of the protocol by paleontology collections. The PaleoPortal group are using a modified version of DiGIR in their portal for paleontology collections. In order to promote the use of standards, a new extension to the Darwin Core 2 schema has been proposed to formalize the element definitions for use with paleontological collections objects, following a discussion at a database workshop held recently at the Illinois State Museum. The proposed Paleontology Extension can be found at http://darwincore.calacademy.org/PendingIssues/Extensions/PaleoExtension/, where it can be downloaded as an XML schema or reviewed as a table of element definitions. Comments and suggestions for improving the extension are welcomed, and can be made using the comments button at the bottom of http://darwincore.calacademy.org/PendingIssues/Extensions/PaleoExtension/Pal eoElementDefs .
