I think that the list members (particularly American members) thought 
it was  deliberately obtuse to ignore the fact that "9/11" has become 
code for "Terrorists attacked the United States and killed 3,000 
people on that day."  Bringing up Catalonia nationalism came across 
as insensitive.

This non-paleontologic tangent detracted from the bonafide 
paleontological content of the original inquest.  I was fascinated to 
find out that Kepkupaiui turned out to be a mistranslation from the 
Greek alphabet for a spawning ground for loggerhead turtles.  Given 
that uniformitarianism doesn't really work unless we understand the 
details of the ecology of modern organisms, it seems silly to 
consider this a 'non-paleontological topic'.
