Dear colleagues This year's first general assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) at Nice/France includes a wealth of palaeontology-related sessions under the heading "Biogeosciences". http://www.cosis.net/members/meetings/programme/view.php?p_id=86 Most sessions are highly interdisciplinary and cover a wide range of topics ranging from genomics to exobiology in the solar system. I specifically want to draw your attention and ask for contributions to the session: BG21 Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in deep time convened by John Alroy (Santa Barbara), Mike Benton (Bristol), Loic Villier (Marseille) and myself. Rationale: Gaining long-term perspectives on the future of biodiversity and ecosystem stability in the light of rapid global change caused by human activities is among the greatest challenges of modern, applied earth system research. A focus on deep time, although confronted with preservational and sampling problems, is the best approach for understanding long-term diversity dynamics in pristine natural systems and for revealing potential links between biodiversity and ecosystem stability. Of particular interest is the impact of non-anthropogenic global change revealed from geological proxies on biotic change. We welcome contributions related to regional or global aspects of ancient biodiversity, exploring different aspects of diversity dynamics and ecosystem functioning and their relation to physical earth system change. Looking forward to seeing you at Nice. Improved Meeting Sites The sites of the Assembly have been greatly improved as compared to the EGS-AGU-EUG Joint Assembly 2003: * posters, exhibition, additional meeting and lecture rooms and large Internet and Wlan sites are now located in an additional 10.000 sqm building, the Exhibition Centre. * the tent on Esplanade is for registration only with separate space for pre- and on-site registrants * the Congress Centre is reserved for oral sessions only with AGORA 2 and 3 for seating and Wlan areas. All poster boards are now landscape of 2 m (width) x 1 m (height) in size, put up in a straight rather than in a zick-zack arrangement, plus a power socket for additional Laptop/Mac presentations. Thus, for EGU 2004 there will be 10.000 sqm more space for posters and the exhibition, more lecture and meeting rooms, better catering facilities and more science to enjoy. __________________________________________________________________ Gesendet von Yahoo!
