To all of Paleonet: SCUM VIII: ANNUAL GATHERING Southern California Unified Malacologists Saturday, January 24, 2004, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM Cabrillo Marine Aquarium 3720 Stephen White Dr., San Pedro, CA 90731 (310) 548-7562 Host: Ron Velarde SCUM is an informal association of southern California professional, amateur, and student malacologists and paleontologists who are active and/or interested in research on mollusks. The purpose of the annual gathering is to facilitate contact and keep one another informed of research activities and opportunities. There are no dues, no officers, and no publications. All persons interested in Recent and/or fossil mollusks are invited to attend. Presentations and discussions are encouraged but should be informal and briefly cover research interests. Slide projectors and laptop computers with PowerPoint facilities will be available. This years gathering is hosted by Ron Velarde at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium auditorium, San Pedro, CA. From the Harbor Freeway south (I-110) exit at Harbor Blvd. and turn right (south). At 6th St. turn right (west) to Pacific Ave. and turn left (south). Take Pacific Ave. to 36th St. which becomes Stephen White Dr. Turn left at Stephen White Dr. to the Cabrillo Beach parking lot and follow the signs to the SCUM meeting (see map nos. 824 & 854 in the 2003 ed. LA County Thomas Brothers map book). The meeting will conclude at 2:30 PM and staff from the aquarium will conduct a tide pool walk at 3:00 PM for those interested. Please phone or e-mail your RSVP directly to Ron at (619) 758-2331 or <rvelarde@sandiego.gov> so he can make parking and refreshment arrangements (Satudray parking is usually $7.00 but he is trying to get passes for SCUM attendees). Scheduled Program 8:30 - 9:00 -- Welcome and refreshments 9:00 - 11:30 -- Introductions and morning presentations 11:30 - 1:00 -- Lunch (there is a snack bar on the beach or there are numerous fast food eateries nearby on Pacific and Gaffey streets) 1:00 - 2:30 -- Afternoon presentations 3:00 - ?? -- Tide pool lecture and tour conducted by Cabrillo Aquarium staff or those attendees not interested the aquarium and gift shop will be open until 5:00 PM. ************************************************************************** Lindsey T.
