paleonet British Geological Survey Palaeontological Collections - convenie nt for the Palaeontological Association's Christmas Meeting at Leicester, U.K.





Those attending the Palaeontological Association Christmas Meeting at
Leicester University, U.K.,(December 14th - 17th, 2003) may like to know
that the headquarters and collections of the British Geological Survey are
just over fourty minutes away by car, at Keyworth, Nottingham.  

The site houses most of the collections formerly in the Geological Museum,
South Kensington. The combined 'Museum', 'Survey' and borehole collections
are the single largest collection of British fossils. The collections are
open from 08:30 to 17:00, Monday to Friday, by prior appointment. Access for
academic study is usually free.

Highlights of the collections include:
 
*  The Geological Museum Collection 
Over 250,000 specimens, including much type, figured and cited material. It
includes the Geological Society of London Collection of British fossils and
important material collected by, amongst many others:

*  The Survey Collection of British fossils - (almost 3,000,000 specimens)
underpins most BGS maps and is the foremost locality based collection of
British fossils.

*  The National Borehole Collection - Almost 200km of drillcore; 600,000
individual registered specimens (the majority with macrofossils) and
1,500,000 samples of cuttings - from over 15,000 boreholes. Most are
available for subsampling for microfossils, mineralogy, petrology &
geochemistry.

*  The Survey Micropalaeontological Collection - Contains over 250,000
slides, including foraminifera, ostracods, conodonts, chitinozoa,
acritarchs, spores & pollen. Many type, figured and cited specimens.
