Those attending the Palaeontological Association Christmas Meeting at Leicester University, U.K.,(December 14th - 17th, 2003) may like to know that the headquarters and collections of the British Geological Survey are just over fourty minutes away by car, at Keyworth, Nottingham. The site houses most of the collections formerly in the Geological Museum, South Kensington. The combined 'Museum', 'Survey' and borehole collections are the single largest collection of British fossils. The collections are open from 08:30 to 17:00, Monday to Friday, by prior appointment. Access for academic study is usually free. Highlights of the collections include: * The Geological Museum Collection Over 250,000 specimens, including much type, figured and cited material. It includes the Geological Society of London Collection of British fossils and important material collected by, amongst many others: G Bomford W Buckland S S Buckman W D Conybeare C G Danford T Davidson E J Garwood E Gray G A Mantell R W Kidston F McCoy R I Murchison R Owen J W Salter J Sowerby J de C Sowerby H A Wyatt-Edgell * The Survey Collection of British fossils - (almost 3,000,000 specimens) underpins most BGS maps and is the foremost locality based collection of British fossils. * The National Borehole Collection - Almost 200km of drillcore; 600,000 individual registered specimens (the majority with macrofossils) and 1,500,000 samples of cuttings - from over 15,000 boreholes. Most are available for subsampling for microfossils, mineralogy, petrology & geochemistry. * The Survey Micropalaeontological Collection - Contains over 250,000 slides, including foraminifera, ostracods, conodonts, chitinozoa, acritarchs, spores & pollen. Many type, figured and cited specimens. * WWW Resources [ http://www.bgs.ac.uk/home.html ] Ø Geoscience Data Index - a map based index of data [ http://www.bgs.ac.uk/geoindex/home.html ] Ø Downloadable reports, e.g. Holostrat & Stratigraphic framework [ http://www.bgs.ac.uk/reference/reports/home.html ] Ø Geolib library catalogue [ http://geolib.bgs.ac.uk/ ] The geological materials collections are a constituent part of the Natural Environment Research Council's (NERC's) National Geoscience Data Centre.
