paleonet PaleoNet West RIP

Due to ongoing problems in maintaining a mirror of the PaleoNet Pages 
on the servers of the Museum of Paleontology, University of California, 
Berkeley, I have decided to close that mirror. The US mirror was 
originally set up a year after PaleoNet was created in order to provide 
US users with ‘local’ access and serve as a backup for the London site. 
Over the intervening years improvements in the WWW in general have 
largely obviated the ‘local access’ justification while server 
reliabilities at both sites have been such that reciprocal backup 
services have never been needed. In addition to this, ever since 
suffering mightily at the hands of hackers several years back, Berkeley 
instituted new and much more rigorous security controls on outside 
access to their systems. Those controls, the need for which I 
understand and support, have had the unfortunate side effect of 
rendering my access to the Berkekely PaleoNet directories for the 
purposes of updating those pages somewhat spotty. Rather than 
continuing to impose on the time and skills of the Berkeley system 
managers, I think it best to pull the pages back to London where I sit 
‘inside looking out’ in terms of server access. Many thanks to Colleen 
Whitney and her colleagues at Berkeley for their support of PaleoNet 
over the past few years. Colleen has already arranged for incoming 
access requests to the PaleoNet West site to be redirected to the 
PaleoNet East site. If anyone has any problems with access to either 
site they should contact me directly at the e-mail address below.
