GAC NEWFOUNDLAND SECTION 2003 FALL FIELD TRIP

"From the Intertidal Zone to the Upper Mantle - The Amazing Geology of
Gros Morne National Park" (October 2-6, 2003)

FIRST INFORMATION CIRCULAR

Overview

This year's field trip is an ambitious venture in which we will
examine the geology of the UNESCO world heritage site of Gros Morne
National Park, with emphasis upon those features that make this
spectacular and scenic area unique in the world of geoscience. The
trip will be led by Robert K. (Bob) Stevens, whose pioneering work
emphasized the Paleozoic sedimentary record, and Tom Calon, whose
more recent work focuses upon mantle tectonics and processes.
Contributions will also be made by other researchers from Parks
Canada, the Geological Survey, and Memorial University. Join us in
this beautiful and world-famous area in Fall 2003!

Tentative Itinerary (subject to changes as plans develop):

Thursday, October 2 - Leave St. John's about 4 PM, stay overnight in
Bishops Falls.

Friday, October 3 - Leave Bishops Falls at 8 AM, meet west coast
members in Deer Lake, and arrive in Gros Morne for lunch. Overview of
Park geology, visit the Grenville basement, basal unconformity, and
examine aspects of autochthonous Paleozoic sedimentary sequence.

Saturday, October 4 - Table Head Ecological Reserve (unconfirmed) and
the geology of the Cow Head Group, the Global Stratotype Section and
Point (GSSP) for the Cambrian-Ordovician boundary.+

Sunday, October 5 - The Tablelands ophiolites and the Moho; a geohike
through the oceanic crust of Iapetus. Dramatic evidence for sea level
changes at Trout River (unconfirmed). *

Monday, October 6 - Morning activities as yet unplanned; Return to St. John's.

+ * These days may be switched to accommodate weather variations

Accommodation in Gros Morne National Park will be at the Memorial
University Marine Station and nearby cabins and/or bed-and-breakfast
establishments.

Costs and Logistics
The final cost has yet to be determined, because we are currently
seeking donations and sponsorships. We hope for a cost of < $ 270 per
person (professional) and < $ 140 per person (student), double
occupancy, including transportation, breakfasts, lunches and one
evening meal. A reduced rate will be available for participants who
are joining the trip in Deer Lake. Further details will be announced
over the summer on the GAC Newfoundland Section web site
(http://gac.esd.mun.ca/nl/nfsection.htm).

Expressions of interest and questions should be directed to Andrew
Kerr or Shirley McCuaig at the Geological Survey
(akr@zeppo.geosurv.gov.nf.ca; sjm@zeppo.geosurv.gov.nf.ca). We plan
for a maximum number of about 45 participants, and may require
payment of a deposit in late summer. If space becomes critical,
priority will be given to GAC Newfoundland Section members.
