The Palaeontology Department of The Natural History Museum, London has received approval to search for two full-time staff positions. These positions are:

* Evolutionary-Developmental Research Palaeobiologist
• Fossil Fish Curator

Department of Palaeontology
Evolutionary Developmental Research Palaeobiologist
Starting Salary £20,122 - £23,853 per annum (depending on experience and including a substantial non-contributory pension)

The Department of Palaeontology is seeking a researcher with a strong interest in evolutionary-developmental biology who can strengthen the Museum’s profile in this field and apply their expertise to systematic, phylogenetic and palaeobiological studies. You should have interests in synthesizing data from fossil and Recent organisms and the potential to contribute to ongoing research in a variety of other palaeontological and evolutionary research programmes.

You must have a Ph.D. or equivalent, have published peer-reviewed articles on evolutionary-developmental research in high-impact journals, be able to generate external income in support of research projects, and be able to communicate science to a diverse audience. You should also be a self-motivated researcher, willing to contribute to Museum media and outreach programmes.

Relevant post-doctoral research, teaching and outreach experience, collections-based research, and/or knowledge of curatorial procedures are highly desirable. Good organizational and team-working/ collaborative skills, and an outward-going personality, are also desirable. The position will be a permanent appointment with subject to a satisfactory three-year review.

Department of Palaeontology
Fossil Fish Curator
Starting Salary £20,122 - £23,853 per annum (depending on experience and including a substantial non-contributory pension)

The Department of Palaeontology of The Natural History Museum, London is seeking a curator to help manage its fossil fish collections. We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated individual with a broad range skills to join the Vertebrates and Anthropology Curation Team, which is responsible for the collections of fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Together these collections span the broadest size range of specimens in the Department (from tiny teeth to gigantic dinosaur skeletons) and occupies about 75 per cent of the departmental storage area at the South Kensington site.

The successful candidate will be expected to support the Museum’s collections management activities by curating the fossil fish specimens (including making collections information available to a wider audience via the WWW), monitoring the collection, carrying out remedial and preventative conservation in association with the Palaeontology Conservation Unit where necessary, promoting use of the collection by encouraging scientists to visit the Museum and supporting them during those visits, and by publishing their own research contributions. In addition, the newly appointed curator will be expected to take an active role in the support of and contribution to Museum research programmes and external income generation activities, as well as participating in the Museum’s outreach programmes through the Darwin Centre and Earth Lab.

A BSc degree (or equivalent) in either Earth Sciences or Biological Sciences, or a minimum of three years experience in collections management is essential. Curation experience, familiarity with collections database applications, and good written/verbal communication skills are also considered essential. A post-graduate qualification in Earth or Biological Sciences as well as some knowledge of fishes, or Museum Studies is desirable.
