To continue Hermann Pfefferkorn's reply, If you look at the paleographic reconstructions you'll find that the area of present day South America was generally south of the tropical zones where high growth rate and plant diversity would be expected. Major coal basins in North America (like the Illinois and Appalachian Basins) were at or near the equator, however. In the Permian, South America is in a more equatorial position.
