Folks,

The United States Geological Survey maintains a geographic names 
information system (GNIS) for the United States and territories, see 
http://geonames.usgs.gov/. They also have a links page that can be used to 
find world-wide data, see http://geonames.usgs.gov/otherlinks.html.
