Title: Position Opening: Geology Museum

The Geology Museum, in the
Department of Geology and Geophysics,
University of
Wisconsin-Madison, is inviting applications to fill the
position
of Museum Director. The
Museum Director is responsible for overseeing
all of the operations of the
museum. His/her duties will include fundraising,
supervision of and
participation in various outreach functions, and
collections management.
We are planning for an addition to the
current museum of
approximately 3500 square feet in the next several
years. The new Director
will lead the funding drive for the building addition,
and for augmenting the
museum's staff and expanding its programs.
Responsibilities also include
teaching one course per semester.
The Geology Museum currently occupies appr. 4,800 square feet
in
Weeks Hall, and features
exhibits in paleontology, mineralogy,
hydrogeology, and other
aspects of earth science. The museum
receives over 21,000 visitors
per year, including more than 13,000
K-12 students and teachers who
receive guided tours. The museum
has considerable holdings of
fossil, mineral, and rock specimens.
Museum personnel are actively
involved in research and in teaching
in the department.
A Ph.D. in the natural
sciences is required. We anticipate hiring at the
junior level; minimum starting
salary $40,000. Starting date for this
position will be January 1,
2004.
