Peter: Actually, the student's diploma and university transcript show what he has learned. No professor is ever under an obligation to write a letter of recommendation. That being said, I agree with Roger: it is best to go ahead and write the letter, tell the truth in it, and let the graduate school or potential employer decide if the student is ready for the job/degree program applied for.
