Hi paleo-teachers: The basic morphology of most Foraminifera can be constructed with only 3 parameters: 1. spiral expansion rate, 2.ratio of successive chamber radii, 3. Angle between successive chambers We have put a simple graphic foram generator on the web where these 3 parameters can be adjusted to produce foram shapes at: http://www.geology.ethz.ch/mp/nlt/foram/foram_eng.html You can give students illustrations of specific planktic or benthic foraminifera (your own or from the literature) and ask them for the appropriate parameters that model most closely their shape. That is worth at least one lecture and a lab exercise. Our students think its fun too. Try it! Feel free to post the link - we shall maintain it.
