Re: paleonet 87Sr/86Sr ratios and paleosalinities

Title: Re: paleonet 87Sr/86Sr ratios and paleosalinities
Hi folks,

I have an undergraduate student here at William and Mary who is very interested in the possibility of using 87Sr/86Sr ratios in bivalve shells to examine paleosalinity levels in the Yorktown formation (Pliocene) in Virginia. This topic is far far outside my area of expertise, and I have been plodding my way through the literature available, but I was wondering whether any of you could give me advice on:

1. Names and institutions of researchers currently using 87Sr/86Sr ratios (preferably in bivalve shells) to determine paleosalinity
2. Useful references for background, data collection, methodology, etc.
3. Feasibility of such a study

Hi Rowan.  Check out the following:

Reinhardt et al. 1998. Geology 26:1003-1006
Vonhof et al. 1998. P-cubed 141:85-93
Holmden et al. 1997. GCA 61:2105-2118
Ingram and Sloan. 1992. Science 255:68-72

. . . and the winner for most proximal in time and space to your interests . . .

Bryant et al. 1995. JP 69:1-6

what is your time-frame and estimated number of samples?  depending upon this, i could run them up here or put you in touch with some other folks.

cheers, s!
