From Science Magazine's "Grant Net" (http://nextwave.sciencemag.org/awards.dtl#6) 6) Assembling the Tree of Life (NSF) A Human Genome Project for taxonomists? That's what the National Science Foundation (NSF) has in mind with its recent "Assembling the Tree of Life" announcement. Large multidisciplinary teams of taxonomists, geneticists, bioinformaticists, anthropologists, paleontologists, and others are invited to submit proposals to classify all 1.7 million described life forms on planet Earth. Applications can be taxon oriented (dealing with data collection and analysis) or method oriented (software or computational method development). All proposals must include training and outreach activities. Eligibility: U.S. academic institutions; U.S. nonprofit research institutions, including natural-history museums, marine laboratories and field stations, and botanical gardens; and consortia of such institutions with appropriate research and educational facilities are eligible. Funds: NSF anticipates funding between three and six grants of up to $3 million each for a maximum of 5 years. Deadline: An optional letter of intent was due by 29 March 2002, but there is still plenty of time to send in a full proposal--complete applications are due by 17 May 2002.
