She has sent a very thoughtful commentary. >>> "Judith Price" <JPRICE@MUS-NATURE.CA> 1:23:01 PM Monday, March 18, 2002 >>> On the question of "names for sale", perhaps paleontologists don't feel the same sense of urgency as some others in the field of systematics. Please look at http://www.all-species.org/firstmeeting_summary.html This is a well-written summary of the state of our progress in systematics and some ideas to help coordinate our efforts. The whole thing is EXPENSIVE. Are any of us getting enough money from the government alone to do this? Government money is taxpayers' money. If we can convince them, even one at a time that the effort is worthwhile, that they should care that we are losing species faster than we are naming them, then perhaps we can increase those base funds. The Nature Discovery Fund of the Canadian Museum of Nature allows people to make a personal investment in this process. It is simply a directed donation to a specific task within an institution, not a new idea in itself, but instead of an obscure single line of acknowledgment in an annual report, we recognize donors in a real way. Please re-read our description of the fund at: http://www.nature.ca/research/ndfund/ndfund_e.cfm and consider the possible benefits to science.
