The Department of Palaeontology at The Natural History Museum (NHM) is seeking an experienced conservator to manage its Palaeontological Conservation Unit (PCU) and to support The NHM Collections Management Theme. The PCU Head will supervise/train staff and will be directly responsible for all departmental fossil preparation/conservation work. In addition, the PCU Head will co-ordinate the reorganisation of the Museum's specimen-conservation efforts and lead the development of a cross-departmental conservation service. The successful candidate is also expected to be involved in the following key areas of collections activity: maintenance and protection, access, advice, development, consultancy, collections conservation research, and external income generation. As well as having an active interest in and knowledge of palaeontology, you will have a BSc Degree in Earth Sciences (or equivalent). A good grounding and minimum of five years experience in palaeontological conservation is also essential. It is important that you have specialist conservation knowledge of at least one major category of fossils. Direct experience with the creation replicas of palaeontological specimens, and experience in the preparation of specimens for research and exhibition is crucial. You should have a demonstrated ability to manage creative people effectively, and to manage income-generating projects. You will have good communication skills and a sound commercial awareness. Finally, it is essential that you be computer literate and that you have knowledge of Health & Safety and COSSH regulations.
