RE: paleonet The Map That Changed the World



Dear colleagues,

I, too, have been dismayed by Simon Winchester's approach to paleontology.
The problem is this:  when one sees so many things that one knows are no so,
one begins to wonder what else might be wrong.  

I think the book is a fun read, and I (think I) am learning quite a bit
about William Smith.  I wish Winchester had taken the time to have a
paleontologist or other geologist look at his manuscript.  I have been
reluctant to recommend it to my students because of the errors.
Nevertheless, I intend to finish reading it.
