Dear colleagues, I, too, have been dismayed by Simon Winchester's approach to paleontology. The problem is this: when one sees so many things that one knows are no so, one begins to wonder what else might be wrong. I think the book is a fun read, and I (think I) am learning quite a bit about William Smith. I wish Winchester had taken the time to have a paleontologist or other geologist look at his manuscript. I have been reluctant to recommend it to my students because of the errors. Nevertheless, I intend to finish reading it. Best wishes, Roger Roger L.
