paleonet COCCOLITHOPHORES - FROM MOLECULAR PROCESSES TO GLOBAL IMPACT

Title: COCCOLITHOPHORES - FROM MOLECULAR PROCESSES TO GLOBAL
2nd Announcement:

Second Announcement and Call for Papers
COCCOLITHOPHORES -
FROM MOLECULAR PROCESSES TO GLOBAL IMPACT
A Conference to be held 10-15 February 2002
at Centro Stefano Franscini, Monte Verità, Ascona, Switzerland
Conference Objectives
The EU-funded Coccolithophorid evolutionary biodiversity and ecology network - CODENET(1) has, over the past four years, made major progress in our understanding of this important phytoplankton group which serves as a prime model for geobiology. At the conference, new results from within and from outside CODENET will be presented in talks and posters and their implications to oceanography, paleoceanography and geobiology will be discussed. Seven themes have been identified, for which we invite oral and poster contributions. Keynote speakers from within and outside CODENET will contribute to each of the themes. Major gaps and new research opportunities will be identified.
Session Themes and Keynote Speakers
Cell biology and biochemistry (Colin Brownlee, Chantal Billard)
E. huxleyi - physiological ecology and bloom studies (Toby Tyrell, Ulf Riebesell)
Coccolithophore ecology (Barney Balch, Jeremy Young)
Molecular phylogeny and evolutionary biodiversity (Isao Inouye, Linda Medlin)
Microevolution and species-level variation (Colomban de Vargas, Hans Thierstein)
Modern and ancient coccolith carbonate fluxes (William W. Hay, Karl-Heinz Baumann)
Evolutionary development of coccolithophorids vs. Global Change (Paul Falkowski, Paul Bown)
