I think some cameras retain the autofocus setting, once it has been set,
until either the shot is taken, or the camera is turned off or the lens
cover is closed or some other form of deactivation is done (at least some of
them used to work that way).  So be careful that you haven't accidently
activated the autofocus while the camera is pointed at the floor, ceiling,
etc.
