The Developmental Basis of Evolutionary Change
            OCTOBER 25th-28th, 2001

In the Spring of 1999 at the University of Chicago, fellow graduate
students held a symposium entitled The Developmental Basis of Evolutionary
Change, which was a great success. This October we will host a second
conference, which will survey a broad range of taxa while focusing
attention upon a few currently active areas of inquiry in order to more
rigorously explore the dynamics between evolution and development. Those
topics will be...

       - Modularity as a conceptual framework for the evolution of
         developmental mechanisms
       - Evolution and diversity in early development
       - Evolution of anterior-posterior patterning and segment
         identity in the arthropod head
       - The Developmental basis for the diversity of vertebrate limb
         morphology

The focused speaker sessions will be complemented by two poster sessions,
intended to cover the great diversity of research in evolution and
development.
