This just in. ---------- Two positions are available beginning either immediately (Postdoc) or on October 1st (PhD-student) for Research in Evolution within the Graduate College "Evolutionary Transformations and Mass Extinctions" of Berlin. The positions will be filled at the doctoral student level (for 2 years plus 1 year prolongation after evaluation, stipend) or postdoctoral level (for 2 years, stipend) depending on the qualifications of the applicants. Both positions come with a substantial travel allowance and a supplies budget. Project 1 is a study of speciation in living Australian crickets. Project 2 - Speciation processes in the fossil record of marine plankton - however is of more interest to paleontologists/micropaleontologists. The goals of this project are to better understand the geographic and environmental controls on speciation in the marine plankton. The work will determine patterns of evolutionary change in selected deep-sea marine microfossil lineages and correlate these patterns to paleoceanographic parameters. Neogene radiolarian faunas from high latitudes are of particular interest, but other types of microfossil materials can be proposed for study by the applicant. Requirements - experience/interest in marine micropaleontology and biologic evolution, appropriate prior training, preferably in marine biological or marine geological sciences, ability to carry out extensive specimen based research using light microscopy, imaging, and morphometrics tools. Fluency in spoken and written english is required, and at least some prior knowledge of German would be advantagous. A successful postdoctoral applicant will be expected, in addition to her/his own research, to assist Graduate College staff in improving communication within the College, e.g., by helping to organise workshops or informal seminars. Applications should include CV; copies of degrees and/or college course transcripts; names, mail and email addresses of all recent former employers; list of publications and a short (one paragraph) statement of research/career interests. All applications are to be sent to: Prof. Dr. Ulrich Zeller, Museum fuer Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin, Inst. fuer Systematische Zoologie, Unter den Linden 6, 10099 Berlin, no later than July 26th.
