Unless, of course, the person receiving the attachment cannot decompress it.

Except on Macintosh and some UNIX platforms.  Never make assumptions about
what software your audience is using.

Sometimes.  And sometimes not.  I don't think the time is here yet when we can
send attached messages without a second thought.  Some folks out here are
still reading their mail with Pine.
