I am posting my response back to the list, since it strikes me that it
my be helpful to know what others have found for generating logs.  I
know that Pierre A. Zippi has developed some software for the MAC that
looks like it might be useful.  He describes it at url:

This is not an endorsement since I have never used his software.  However, 
he is a working palynologist, and his description looks like this may 
be something useful.
