Employees of Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, the central research
Lab for the Hewlett-Packard Company have propopsed and are
creating a Celebration of Life one-mile long "Walk Thu Time ...
from Stardust to Us" event for Earth Day Tuesday, 22 April 1997.
The Walk unfolds the evolution of life at one-million years per
foot, and raises questions about the future of life on Earth.

The intent is to create an experiental encounter with the story
of our origins from the formation of the earth some 5 billion
years ago. The belief is that ...

1) a viscerally meaningful comprehension of the temporal
perspective, coupled with

awareness that ...

2) the sun can support life on Earth for another billion years,
more or less,

3) species diversity recovery from past mass extinctions has
taken 10-100 million years, and that

4) man is precipitating what could become the next mass
extinction ...

will encourage people revisit their world views, paradigms,
priorities, actions, and inactions.

The initial audience was proposed to be the 1000 employees of
HP Labs. However, interest in leveraging is spreading rapidly,
insided and outside HP.

We are encountering the expected tedious transactions involved
in obtaining permissions to use illustrative copyrighted art
from book publishers, and other copyright holders.

REQUEST: If you have pointers to quality public domain art,
either (scannable, digitized, URLs) that we might use for this
event ... for the 150 graphics Walk-along posters we are
preparing we would deeply appreciate pointers from you.
Time and permission permitting, we might also like to include
some of these images in a memento program. At a future date
we would also like to place the "Walk" text and images on
the World-Wide-Web.

Thanks, and THANKS to all you members of the the
paleontological community for playing such a central role in
uncovering the story for the rest of us to see!
