A new foram publication is available on the World Wide Web. I compiled "Planktic foraminifera and the physical environment in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean - An atlas based on CLIMAP and Levitus (1982) data". Basically it combines plots of relative abundances vs. a number of physical parameters with a brief analysis of (extant) planktic foram ecology based on this data. I did not intend a comprehensive review, however. It is more like a technical report. Much about planktic foram ecology has been derived from multivariate statistics of the same kind of data. The atlas shows the structure in the raw data including some physical parameters that have not been analysed in the past. My students liked the plots because they show the multivariate character of planktic foram adaptations in a graphic form. I like to work with the atlas because it helps to understand populations and to locate open questions. All files together, the atlas has a size of 1.9 MB. If you want to become a frequent user you may wish to save the download time and to have the atlas "on your desk". The hypertext files are available. All relevant information on how to get "reprints" is supplied with the atlas. The WWW address is: http://www.erdw.ethz.ch/~heinz/HH1996/aa_start.html Have fun and send me comments (link provided with the atlas).
