I was just working on a plate when I got your message. Here's what I do: I collect video prints and electronic scans for the SEM. I use the video prints to choose which pics I'm going to use on the plate so that you won't waste time cleaning up electronic scans that you won't use. I usually scan in the pictures at 512 x 512 resolution, as they are going to be no more than say, and inch and a half on the plate. If your picture is going to be bigger, I'd scan at a higher resolution (1024+). For cleaning up the pictures I use Photoshop, but any powerful graphics package will do. I would suggest that you make your plate at lease 600 dpi (dots per inch) otherwise the figure numbers will appear to have serrated edges. The last step is to take your electronic plate to a linotronic outputting device, which is a very high res publication quality printer.
