Dear Paleonet People, recently a colleague draw my attention to Paleonet. In this context I would like to draw your attention to UNESCO-Project 341, Southern Hemisphere Paleo and Neoclimates. Here we developed worldwide uniform evolutionary based age-ranges (Forams, Coccos, Rads and Diatoms) as well as age-models for DSDP/ODP sites based on these fossils. Methods and data are available to IGCP-341 members. Data consist of absolute worldwide calibrated evolutionary ranges of some thousands of fossils (e.g. NOT zones but really what evolution tells us), datings for several thousand DSDP/ODP sites (ALL groups synchronously), age-models for some hundred DSDP/ODP-sites paleotemperature estimates in degreees centigrade back into Miocene, ocean-maps (synchronization done through this stratigraphy) back into Miocene. Publication is in progress. Total volume of data (fossils, datings, agemodels etc.) is about 60-100MB. Next (current) step is merging the paleocoastlines, next is then modeling potential non-analogue climates. While IGCP-341 focuses especially on Tertiary especially Neogene, the algorithms are applicable to any time. Sincerely Dr. Peter P. Smolka (co-leader IGCP-341) Snail mail: Dr. Peter P.
