The agenda was reviewed by Rich Lane and a discussion of a proposal by Professor Jose Longoria would be added to the agenda after the tour of the laboratories and before our discussion of last year's accomplishments. John Wrenn and George Hart of Louisiana State University, presented discussions as per the attached agenda. Second Agenda Item: The first proposed the continued development of a distributional model for modern dinoflagellates through industry support. It involved the sampling to four sections, 2 on the east side of the delta and 2 on the west side. Third Agenda Item: The second proposal's purpose is to evaluate whether or not climatic signals can be extracted from the Shell Gulf of Mexico palynologic database housed in Baton Rouge. A sample database of 75 wells will be subjected to multivariate statistical analysis to determine if climatically significant palynomorphs assemblages can be discriminated. A budget was presented Fourth Agenda Item: The third proposal involved pilot project on computerization of selected palynologic data from the Shell palynologic collections currently housed at LSU. This proposal is of interest to most of industry since this information is accessible to all and a budget for the project was presented. The goals of this project are: 1. Establish literature equivalency for the key Neogene-Holocene palynomorphs in the Shell taxonomic system. 2. Enter biostratigraphic data (species, depth, abundance, etc.) for 50 wells (minimum) into BugWare. Fifth Agenda Item: The fourth presentation was a summary of the progress made at CENEX during the past 3 years. Brochures for BugWare, ChartWare, Beta Version of Fence Program, and Lafayette Paleo Labs, Inc. were distributed. Sixth Agenda Item: review of progress on the state of industry collections was discussed and basically it was reported by Alvin Gabriel, H. R. Lane, Sheila Barnette and Mike DuMont that there had been no responses, except for that from Dennis Logan, Phillips, to our survey. It was agreed that all companies would have their information into the committee by May 1 in order that it could be analyzed and summarized for presentation in early June in Washington D. C. Seventh Agenda Item: As part of the last agenda item and sort of the "first company out of the shoot", Dennis Logan of Phillips presented an overview of paleontologic collections at Phillips in Bartlesville. Dennis brought with him a thick printout of the Phillips collections and stated that this was not all. It was pointed out by Rich as an example to be followed by the rest of the companies. Eighth Agenda Item: Due to Gary's absence, an update on the equivalency project was not given. Ninth Agenda Item: Pete McLaughlin volunteered to compile the Vendor Directory. The purpose of the directory is to have in one location a complete as possible list of vendors available for paleontologic/biostratigraphic work. The Directory is to include the following information: 1. Vendor name 2. Paleontologists Names 3. Vendor addresses 4. Phone/Fax numbers, e-mail address 5. Services offered a. Fossil Types b. Geologic Age Range of Specialty c. Geographic Specialization d. Previous Company Affiliations e. Experience f. Associated Stratigraphic Data Generated 6. Standard Time Scale Used 7. Data Capture Mode (BugWare, yellow sheet lists, Bug-In, etc.) 8. Products Provided (maps, check-lists, range charts, etc.) 9. Well-site Work (yes or no) 10 Current rates The Directory will be available to anyone inside or outside industry. IBC members are to send their lists to Pete McLaughlin ASAP following the above format agreed to during the meeting. Anyone outside of the IBC who wishes to participate, please send your information to Peter McLaughlin, Exxon Exploration, Technology Department, P. O. Box 4778, Houston, TX, 77210-4778, Ph. 713-423-5988, e-mail--pete.mclaughlin@exxon.sprint.com. Tenth Agenda Item: Progress on IPS was deferred because of Gary Jones' absence. Eleventh Agenda Item: The IBC members toured Amoco's Earth Science laboratory. They viewed Amoco's laboratories for the extraction of spores and pollen, dinoflagellates, nannofossils, arenaceous and calcareous foraminifera, conodonts, siliceous microfossils and paleontology thin-section facilities. They also viewed the core and sample layout facilities, SEM Laboratory, Kerogen Extraction Laboratories and the Sample Storage Area. Twelfth Agenda Item: Rich passed out a FAX from Jose Longoria, Florida International University, requesting support from industry for the Forams97 Meeting to be held in Monterey, Mexico. We all agreed that it was a worthy cause, but that it was pointed out the we could not act in unison on support, but that each of us could take it up with our respective managements and contact Prof. Longoria individually Thirteenth Agenda Item: every year the IBC reviews its accomplishments for the previous year and plans for goals for the current year. It was decided to list the accomplishments for the group for 1995 at this meeting and to review goals for 1996 at the next meeting. The following accomplishments for 1995 were identified by the attendees: 1. Arranged for 2 oral sessions at NAPC 6. These sessions are "Quantitative Stratigraphic Paleontology" and "Biological Signature of Sequence Stratigraphic Units". The IBC was particularly pleased with this accomplishment because it is felt that industry has not participated as actively in previous NAPC and it is the desire of the IBC to change this. 2. Organized two oral and two poster sessions at the AAPG in Houston, March 1995. One of the goals of the IBC is to generate interest in non-paleontologists to attend paleontological sessions at these national meetings. Talks were geared toward goal at the 1995 AAPG. 3. Evening Meeting at AAPG. The IBC was able to schedule an open meeting at the AAPG in association with the Marine Micropaleontology Section of SEPM. 4. Taxonomic Equivalency. The IBC began the enormous process of establishing taxonomic equivalency charts between the various majors paleontologic programs. This effort is continuing into 1996. 5. Vendor List. The IBC undertook assembling a Vendor List and this effort is also continuing into 1996. 6. Paleontology in the 21st Century: The IBC undertook the organizing of a conference on Paleontology in the 21st Century to be held at Senckenberg Museum, Frankfurt Germany, 1997. Details of that meeting will be announced soon. 7. Meeting Notes on Paleonet: In order to promote better communication with the rest of the paleontological world, it was decided to post all IBC minutes on PaleoNet. 8. Three presentations to Houston Lunchbunch: In order to promote better communications with the Paleontological community in Houston, the IBC wishes to issues and results at the periodic Houston Lunchbunch meetings. In 1995 the IBC made 3 such presentations. 9. Influenced the hiring of at least 2 paleontologists in the majors: As it is our goal to turn around the paleontologist employment situation in the major petroleum companies, there are at least two situations where IBC activities has positively impacted the hiring of paleontologists. 10. Better Coordination of Sample Storage and Loans: Better communication within the IBC has led to better coordination of sample storage and loans. Fourteenth Agenda Item: Suggested Agenda items for the next IBC meeting. 1. 1996 plans and goals for the IBC and a written summary of 1995 (H. R. Lane). 2. TG IPS Update (Anthony Gary). 3. Taxonomic Equivalency Update (Gary Jones/Brian O'Neill) 4. Industry Collections Update (Sheila Barnette, Mike DuMont, Alvin Gabriel, H. R. Lane) The next meeting of the IBC will be on June 17 at BP Exploration and chaired by Sheila Barnette. Meeting was adjourned
