I am completing a young adult biography of Mary Anning (Lyme Regis, 1799-1847), the pioneer English fossil hunter. I came across an article in the "Gentleman's Magazine" from 1829 by the Bristol geologist George Cumberland praising "the patient labors of three female pioneers in this service, viz. Mary Anning, a dealer, Miss Congrieve, and Miss Philpots." The Philpot sisters, fossil collectors in Lyme and collaborators with Anning, are well known to me, but I have not a clue who Miss Congrieve is and have had no luck trying to track her down. Does anyone have any idea who she is? Thanks for any help you can offer! Tom Goodhue tgoodhue@suffolk.lib.ny.us 160 South Bay Ave. Brightwaters, NY 11718-2021 (516)666-6211
