Call For Papers, Western Society of Malcologists Meeting

                       WESTERN SOCIETY OF MALACOLOGISTS
                     ANNUAL MEETING SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
                              23 - 27 JUNE, 1996

                                CALL FOR PAPERS

The Western Society of Malacologists will hold its 29th
annual meeting June 23-27, 1996 at the newly renovated Handlery
Hotel & Resort, Hotel Circle, San Diego California.

Scientific papers on all aspects of mollusks are solicited.
Planned symposia will include BIOLOGY AND EVOLUTION OF CYPRAEOIDEA,
FUNCTIONAL MORPHOLOGY & NATURAL HISTORY OF MOLLUSCAN FEEDING, and
INVERTEBRATE DNA: PROSPECTS & PROBLEMS.

Deadline for titles of talks is May 1. Deadline for abstracts
is June 1. Abstracts should be typed in a 5-inch square box,
containing less than 250 words, in a format similar to the sample
abstract shown below. We intend to print your abstract in the
meeting program just as it is received. Dark type is desirable.

Field trips are planned to Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute,
paleontology sites in San Diego County, and Stephen Birch Aquarium
at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Local and Mexico SCUBA
diving trips can be arranged.

               SYMPOSIA

      BIOLOGY AND EVOLUTION OF CYPRAEOIDEA:

Symposium Chairs: Terry Arnold and Lindsey Groves.

Topics include almost any aspect of cypreaoidean and/or
trivioidean biology and evolution, such as paleontology, shell
morphology & mineralogy, systematics, biogeography....

Abstracts should be submitted as-soon-as-possible to Lindsey
T. Groves or Terry Arnold. (Addresses are shown below.)

FUNCTIONAL MORPHOLOGY & NATURAL HISTORY OF MOLLUSCAN FEEDING:

      Symposium Chair: Hans Bertsch.

Any study on predation by mollusks is welcome; special
emphasis will be given to the correlation between radular or gill
morphology and prey selection. This symposium will also include
papers on feeding preferences, seasonal or geographic variations,
parasitism, behavioral interactions with prey, and other life
history studies on how mollusks, past or present, obtain
nourishment.

Abstracts should be submitted as-soon-as-possible to Hans
Bertsch or Hugh Bradner. (Addresses are shown below.)

      INVERTEBRATE DNA: PROSPECTS AND PROBLEMS:

      Symposium Chair: Michael Hellberg.

This symposium will introduce non-specialists to the use of
invertebrate DNA and techniques of its application, followed by
papers on using DNA to study species evolution, generic
relationships, etc. Papers on any aspect of the subject are
welcome.

Abstracts should be submitted as-soon-as-possible to Michael
Hellberg or Hugh Bradner. (Addresses are shown below.)

Molluscan thanatocoenoses have been studied in 35 areas on the coast
of Peter the Great Bay (north-western part of the Sea of Japan). The
taxonomic composition of the thanatocoenoscs commonly reflects
environmental variability. The shallow waters and environmental mixing
does not play a significant role in the formation of those death
assemblages in the both open and sheltered bays- There seems to be
minimal postmortem migration of molluscan shells between open and
semi-enclosed bays. It was found that heterochronous shell material of the
Holocene age is a usual component of the beach thanatocoenoses in
semi-enclosed, sheltered areas due to erosional action of rivers.
