Electronic Publishing

I've recently reorganized and updated the PaleoNet Pages and, in view of
the electronic publishing discussion, I should mention that on the "Places
To Go" page...

...there is a new category, "Misc. Electronic Paleo. Contributions." I
actually set this up yesterday when I was establishing a link to Richard's
ms and O. Hammer's illustration of results obtained from his experiments
with modelling ammonoid rib patterns. If anyone knows of other electronic
quasi-publications that would be of interest to paleontologists, or has a
site they have recently set up for this purpose, please let me know. In
addition, let me remind you that PaleoNet has its own space devoted to the
exploration of electronic forms of publishing, or communicating, or
whatever you want to call it; the PaleoNet Forum. The Forum is one
alternative for the placement of technical articles, editorials, reviews,
etc. that saves the author the time and effort involved in setting up and
maintaining their own web page for this purpose. If you have an idea for a
Forum article let me know and we'll get your piece scheduled. No technical
expertise is needed to place an article in the PaleoNet Forum.

My own view is that electronic publishing is here to stay. Let's get busy
solving the problems its existence poses and making sure paleontology
benefits from access to this tool rather than wondering whether electronic
publishing its a good/bad thing to have occurred. Like motor cars,
airplanes, light bulbs, and (yes) computers, its already happened. The only
thing left for us to do is deal with it.
