Subject: more HF in paleo

My recent comments on safety & HF was forwarded to an other listserver.
>From there I received a response by Claus Hedegaard that may be helpfull
for paleontologists handling HF.
I included a statement by William A. Shear in my message:
>>>spill kits which are available from any good science supplier. Used acid
>>>can be neutralized with sodium bicarbonate.

The comment by Claus Hedegaard refers to this passage:
> Sodium or potassium hydroxide may be preferably - they do not effervesce
>when mixed with acid. After neutralisation the dissolved fluoride may be
>precipitated by adding calcium chloride, forming CaF2, though this does not
>necessarily get rid of Si/Al-fluoride complexes.
>comment from Claus Hedegaard (claus@ucmp1.Berkeley.EDU)

I hope this can help to reduce trouble with HF in our laboratories.
