Literature Searches

I am looking for some help.  I have a need to find a method to use the internet 
to allow me to run searches for published articles in the 
scientific/technical/popular literature.

For instance, I may want to do a literature search to look for articles on the 
fossils from the Almont formation of North Dakota.  	

Does anyone know how I can use the internet to link to the large databases out 
there.  I use STN from work but I can not use that for private use.  I 
understand that I will likely need to pay a fee for searches.  I am looking for 
the links on how to get access to the literature databases, this would include 
books as well as periodicals.

Can anyone shed some light on this and lend some help ?
