PALEONTOLOGY SECTION HOUSTON GEM AND MINERAL SOCIETY The Paleontology section of the Houston Gem and Mineral Society meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month. The purpose of the group is to collect, study, prepare, and exhibit fossils. Our activities include writing, publishing, and selling books about Texas fossils and localities, regular field trips, study groups, and classes. Our meetings are open to visitors and new members are always welcome. Recent and upcoming activities include: December, 1995 Field Trip The field trip was to the home of George Wolf to view the vertibrate fossils and Indian artifacts he personally collected. His extensive collection has completely taken over two rooms of his house! No collecting on this trip. January 16, 1996 7:30 PM: Section Meeting. The program is on vertibrate fossils of Yazo Clay (upper Eocene) from the Copenhagen locality in Caldwell Parish, Lousiana. Heading south on the Beltway 8 (Sam Houston) Toll Road from I-10 or Westheimer, you will exit onto the beltway frontage road at the last exit before being forced onto the SW freeway. If you end up on the SW freeway, you will travel quite far out of your way before access allows you to come back. After moving over to the southbound service road, the second opportunity to turn right will be Roark (clearly labeled). Once on Roark, turn right at the first opportunity (Rockley) and go one block to Brooklet. Turn right and park, the first glass door on your right is the clubhouse. Heading southwest the SW Freeway, exit to the frontage road just before the Beltway 8 exit. Turn right just past the Holiday Inn and then take the first right onto Brooklet. Go almost to the end of Brooklet, and the clubhouse will be on your right just past the last intersection that you go through. | | / | | / | | / | | / | | / Wilcrest Beltway 8 / SW Freeway (59) | | / | | / ------------|-----------------------|-----------------/------ Bissonnet | | / | | / | A| / | | / A - Auchan | | /-----/ Hypermarket | | / | | / | Brooklet /| / | /* / | / * - location of Rockley ---------------/----/ | / HG&MS clubhouse |--------------/ / |/ Beltway 8 |-------------/Roark / ends here Stancliff |---------- / / for now. | \/ H / H - Holiday Inn | /---\--------/ | / | / ^ | / | ---------|---/-------- W.
