Regarding 3D reconstructions from serial 2D images, yes, most people doing
this stuff use Unix workstations.  That's partly because the software 
packages designed for this task are large, complex, and expensive, so it
makes sense to share them in a computer graphics laboratory.  I would be
very surprised if most PALEONET readers could not find someone with these
tools at their own university, either in a computer science, engineering,
or medical research department.  Why not investigate whether you can share
someone else's 3D imaging system, rather than buying your own at the start?

Usenet newsgroups relevant to 3D reconstructions include most groups in the
comp.graphics.* hierarchy, some in comp.soft-sys.*, sci.image.processing,
and several groups in sci.techniques.*.

(FWIW, Usenet newsgroups are somewhat like electronic mailing lists.)
