There has been some attempt to apply archeological laws to paleontology in South Carolina, but this reputedly consists of state officials trying to confiscate showy stuff like Carcharodon megalodon teeth on the basis of the antiquities act rather than an attempt to protect paleontologically important material. For my work, OSHA mining regulations and local quarry rules about collectors have the most impact. Most proposed paleontological legislation doesn't mention invertebrates.
