Rather than focusing only on electronic journals: How about WEB-based electronic poster sessions? Imagine all of the poster sessions from GSA or AGU meetings posted to the WEB. Each poster could consist of 4 pages - a too-small-to-read-well overall view with the title, and 3 close-up views with fully legible figures, photos, and captions. Related posters could be linked. Schedules could be established for chat areas, so that authors could communicate with remote viewers. Rather than an audience of 3000 that can make it to San Francisco or wherever, the posters could have an international audience of 10,000s. Since WEB-page material can easily be downloaded, some presenters might be concerned about security of information prior to publication in a regular journal.
